Kumar was born to a Sindhi mother from Kolkata and a  Keralite  father. He did not speak Tamil as a child, and mastered it only after becoming an actor. He dropped out of  Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School  in 1986 before completing his higher secondary.  He took up work as a two-wheeler auto mechanic, and got himself a driver's license to coincide with his interests in car and bike racing. In childhood he was fan of M. G. Ramachnadran and Rajesh Khanna. During his teens he became fan of Rajnikanth & Kamal Hasan. At 18, Ajith had to take up a job to support his career in racing. Joining as an apprentice, he rose to be a merchandiser with a garment export company, doing small-time press ads and TV commercials occasionally. Vijay was born to a famous Tamil film producer and director S. A. Chandrasekhar. His career geared up when he acted in Ghilli, one of the biggest blockbuster in Tamilnadu. He has won awards such as the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor and Dinakaran Best Actor Award. Vijay was given an Honorary doctorate title in 2007 for his social services.

In July 2012, it was reported first that Suriya had signed on Lingusamy's film to be produced under the director's banner and that he would work on it after  and Hari's  After the completion of both films, the actor was reported to work simultaneously with Lingusamy and director  for a film titled Dhruva Natchathiram .
