I’m quite certain that at the beginning of this year no one on the planet would have predicted that 10 months into 2017, a little family drama from India would have out-grossed nearly every single Hollywood film in China. Or that since its opening day in early May, that only one Hollywood picture, Transformers: The Last Knight, would have topped Dangal’s run, and barely, at that.

Dangal played for 60 days in what turned out to be one of the leggiest runs in global movie history, finishing up with $189 million, a multiple of 80 times its May 5th opening day total of $2.35 million, It was the number one movie at the Chinese box office for 16 consecutive days, and it ranked among the top three from the day it opened until June 7th, a remarkable 34 straight days. The only Hollywood film that has ever come close was the Disney animated feature Zootopia, which finished up with a then-record multiple of 67 times its opening day collection, and 10 straight days at number one.

Since May, the following Hollywood movies have come and gone in China without coming within a mile of Dangal’s numbers: Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Wonder Woman, The Mummy, Alien: Covenant, Despicable Me 3, Dunkirk, Valerian: The City of a Thousand Planets, Spider-Man: Homecoming, War For the Planet of the Apes, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and The Foreigner, among others. Not Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Ryan Reynolds, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Luc Besson, Marvel, DC, nor Illumination Entertainment could beat the modest Aamir Khan-starring sports drama. Even Jackie Chan, China’s own homegrown superstar, has grossed less than half of Dangal’s total with his action-drama The Foreigner.

None of the dozen above-mentioned Hollywood blockbusters could touch Dangal despite their average production budgets of nearly $150 million. Dangal cost just $10 million to make.

Prior to May, no Indian film had ever reached the $25 million gross box office threshold at Chinese theaters, and none had reached $50 million (INR 325 crore) in overseas grosses. Until May, the biggest Indian film ever was the 2014 Aamir Khan-starring sci-fi comedy PK, which had amassed $20 million in Chinese box office, and an additional $46 million internationally.
